AIARE 1 class

Traveling in a winter environment has inherent risk. Snow conditions dramatically change throughout the winter, affecting snow stability. The ability to recognize avalanche terrain and have a decision-making framework to travel in avalanche terrain is critical to your safety. This AIARE Level 1 avalanche course is designed to give students a basic understanding of why avalanches occur and to develop a framework for making decisions while traveling in avalanche terrain. Additionally, the course provides instruction in beacon use and companion rescue should an avalanche occur.

This is a WAC-exclusive course run by the professional educators of Kaf Adventures. There are 8 hours of online instruction you will be expected to complete prior to the weekend, as well as a quick planning meeting. Both Saturday and Sunday will be nearly full days in the field. The course will be held at Snoqualmie Pass, based out of our very own Guye Cabin.

AIARE 1 is a prerequisite for the WAC’s Backcountry Travel course beginning January 17 so this is a great opportunity to learn the theory and immediately put it into practice. Right now this course has 12 openings on a first-come-first-served basis and is only suited for backcountry skiers and splitboarders.

Kaf Adventures is generously offering our members a $50 discount on this course. Whether or not AIARE 1 is for you, please check out some of their other great programs:
