What:
Hello Current and Future WAC Instructors,
You asked for leadership training and we answered! We will be doing a series of leadership workshops in the coming months, the first of which will be a rescue scenario at Gasworks Park on Monday, November 7th at 5pm followed by a debrief at Anil’s home (nearby, with warm drinks). Please RSVP to the RMT, by October 31st, if you’ll join us. We will put together two groups of 5-7 on a first-come basis.
In the scenario, you’re traveling at night in less-than-ideal conditions when someone in your party gets hurt. You will need to provide first aid and evacuate them (to another point in the park). This will test your group decision-making and communication skills, as well as your first aid skills (more on requisite skills in a moment). We will retire to Anil’s afterward to discuss how the exercise went.
What skills do I need?
We would like one person in each group to have wilderness first aid skills. Otherwise, the prep you have as a WAC instructor is sufficient.
Is this for new or returning instructors?
This practice session is for all instructors. Those with rescue experience will have an opportunity to keep their skills sharp and those who are new will be able to develop new skills. Everyone will get to practice and experience group decision-making and communication skills.
Nov 7th… isn’t it cold and dark then? Will it rain?
Yes, it might be! We will be holding this event rain or shine (pending enough participants). The conditions will make the exercise a little more challenging (some might say “real”).
What do I need to bring?
You should bring the clothing you’d need to be comfortable in likely-cold-and-wet conditions. You don’t need to bring a first aid kit or any supplies. We will supply those.
What can I expect to learn?
You can expect to practice group decision-making and communication skills in a controlled but practical environment. You will see and experience how group dynamics evolve in a simulated-urgent situation. You will be given feedback on your contribution to the rescue from your peers and observers so we can collective up our game :-).
What is the schedule for the evening?
We will start at 6:00 pm (sharp!) and finish with the exercise by 7:15 PM. We will debrief from 7:30 to 8:00 PM.
